Coconut oil is full of anti-oxidants. It is anti-fungal and anti-bacterial so it prevents infection when used topically.

It penetrates deep into the skin making it a moisturizer and a hydrator.  Which means it prevents water loss from the skin.  It helps with dandruff, psoriasis, and dermatitis.

Oil pulling—Swishing a tablespoon in the mouth for 10-20 minutes.  Your teeth have from 1000 to 10,000 bacterial on every tooth.  That adds up to a lot of bacteria in your mouth.  When you spit it out along with the oil is a lot of bacterial that can cause infections of the gums and mouth. Make sure you spit it out in the garbage.  If you put it down your drain it may cause it to clog. There are claims that it will help to whiten your teeth.  Dentists say that oil pulling will not reverse tooth decay, so continue with your regular visits to the dentist.

My teeth had been turning yellow.  I had used several different “whitening” tooth pastes and tried tooth brushes with stiffer bristles but nothing seemed to make a difference. I decided to try oil pulling.  The first time I was unable to put a whole tablespoon of coconut oil in my mouth so I started with 1 teaspoon.  Ten minutes seemed like forever so I did it for about 3 minutes.  When I spit it out I couldn’t believe it but my teeth were significantly whiter.  Coconut oil doesn’t taste bad so I was able to do it again.  This is something I will be doing regularly.  It is such an inexpensive way to have white teeth and the other benefits are great.

It can be used as shaving cream.  I use it as a make-up remover.  When I wash it off my face and neck feel smooth and soft.

Recipe Makeup Remover

  • 1 part baking soda
  • 2 parts coconut oil

Mix together.  I use my hand mixer to incorporate air into the formula.  This makes it soft and easy to apply in the winter.  When coconut oil is cold it is harder.  In the summer it can melt.  For the couple of weeks that it gets hot where I live I keep it in the refrigerator so it doesn’t melt.  If it does melt it is still good to use but you need to stir it often as you use it.  The baking soda gives the formula exfoliating properties.

Apply to the face and neck and chest.  I don’t have makeup on my neck and chest but, hey,  this is so good for the skin why not?  You can wash it off with a soft cloth and warm water.  I usually apply it then do something else for a while just to let the coconut oil have more time on my skin.

Coconut taken internally is really good for you also.  Eating coconut oil relieves stress on the pancreas improving insulin sensitivity and regulating blood sugar levels. In a 2012 study it was shown to maintain bone structure and prevent bone loss.  Coconut oil helps the body absorb fat soluble vitamins like D, E and K.
